1989: Massacre in Tiananmen Square

Several hundred civilians have been shot dead by the Chinese army during a bloody military operation to crush a democratic protest in Peking's (Beijing) Tiananmen Square.

Tanks rumbled through the capital's streets late on 3 June as the army moved into the square from several directions, randomly firing on unarmed protesters.

The injured were rushed to hospital on bicycle rickshaws by frantic residents shocked by the army's sudden and extreme response to the peaceful mass protest.

Demonstrators, mainly students, had occupied the square for seven weeks, refusing to move until their demands for democratic reform were met.

The protests began with a march by students in memory of former party leader Hu Yaobang, who had died a week before.

But as the days passed, millions of people from all walks of life joined in, angered by widespread corruption and calling for democracy.

Tonight's military offensive came after several failed attempts to persuade the protesters to leave.

Throughout the day the government warned it would do whatever it saw necessary to clamp down on what it described as "social chaos".

But even though violence was expected, the ferocity of the attack took many by surprise, bringing condemnation from around the world.

US President George Bush said he deeply deplored the use of force, and UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said she was "shocked and appalled by the shootings".

Amid the panic and confusion students could be heard shouting "fascists stop killing," and "down with the government".

At a nearby children's hospital operating theatres were filled with casualties with gunshot wounds, many of them local residents who were not taking part in the protests.

Early this morning at least 30 more were killed in two volleys of gunfire, which came without warning. Terrified crowds fled, leaving bodies in the road.

Meanwhile reports have emerged of troops searching the main Peking university campus for ringleaders, beating and killing those they suspect of co-ordinating the protests.

Mars Hill Church

Mars Hill Church lives for Jesus as a city within the city—knowing culture, loving people, and seeing lives transformed to live for Jesus.

Below is the original Mars Hill Statement of Faith. Additionally, you can reference the Gospel Coalition Confessional Statement for further detail of our beliefs. For more details you can watch the sermon series Doctrine for a more in depth look at our beliefs.

The Scriptures

We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible, and God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; Matthew 5:18; John 16:12, 13).

The Godhead

We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—co-eter¬nal in being, co-eternal in nature, co-equal in power and glory, having the same attributes and perfec¬tions (Deuteronomy 6:4; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
the Person and Work of Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man (John 1:1–2, 14; Luke 1:35). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished ¬our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice, and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead (Romans 3:24; 1 Peter 2:24; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:3–5). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry as Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Acts 1:9, 10; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 9:24; Romans 8:34; 1 John 2:1–2). We believe Jesus is coming again to judge the living and the dead (1 Peter 4:5; Romans 14:9; 2 Timothy 4:1).

The Person and Work of The Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; He is the Supernatural Agent in regenera¬tion, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemp¬tion (John 16:8–11; 2 Corinthians 3:6; 1 Corinthians 12:12–14; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 5:18).

The Total Depravity of Man

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam’s sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; man is totally depraved and of himself utterly unable to remedy his lost condition (Genesis 1:26, 27; Romans 3:22, 23; 5:12; Ephesians 2:1–3, 12).

Salvation

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins (Ephesians 2:8–10; John 1:12; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18–19).

Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers

We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever (John 6:37–40; 10:27–30; Romans 8:1, 38, 39; 1 Corinthians 1:4–8; 1 Peter 1:5). We believe that it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God’s Word, which clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion for the flesh (Romans 13:13, 14; Galatians 5:13; Titus 2:11–15).

The Ministry and Spiritual Gifts

We believe that God is sovereign in the bestowing of spiritual gifts. It is, however, the believer’s responsi¬bility to attempt to develop their sovereignly given spiritual gift(s). The baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs at conversion and is the placing of the believer into the Body of Christ. We also believe that particular spiritual gift(s) are neither essential, nor prove the presence of the Holy Spirit, nor are an indication of deep spiritual experience (1 Corinthians 12:7, 11, 13; Ephesians 4:7–8). We believe that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith, in accordance with His own will, for the sick and afflicted (John 15:7; 1 John 5:14, 15). We believe that it is the privilege and responsibility of every believer to minister according to the gift(s) and grace of God that is given to him (Romans 12:1–8; 1 Corinthians 13; 1 Peter 4:10–11).

The Church

We believe that the church, which is the body and espoused bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of all born-again persons (Ephesians 1:22, 23; 5:25–27; 1 Corinthians 12:12–14; 2 Corinthians 11:2). We believe that the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures (Acts 14:27; 18:22; 20:17; 1 Timothy 3:1–3; Titus 1:5–11). We believe in the autonomy of the local churches, free of any external authority and control (Acts 13:1–4; 15:19–31; 20:28; Romans 16:1,4; 1 Corinthians 3:9, 16; 1 Corinthians 5:4–7, 13; 1 Peter 5:1–4). We recognize believer’s baptism and the Lord’s supper as scriptural means of testimony for the church (Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 2:41, 42; Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26).

AISD in line for $13.8M

The Abilene Independent School District and other Big Country schools stand to receive millions of dollars in federal grants in the stimulus package the House is expected to vote on today.

The AISD could receive nearly $14 million over fiscal years 2009 and 2010.

But Big Country congressmen have not been swayed by the possibility of a boost in school funding as estimated by the Congressional Research Service or by President Barack Obama reaching out to them Tuesday on Capitol Hill.

Abilene's congressman, U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer, and the rest of the delegation said they are not supportive of the $825 billion American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009, regardless of school funding.

"The question should be: (on) every dollar that we're spending, because we're going to have to go borrow it, will it stimulate the economy and not whether these projects are worthwhile," Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, said.

The stimulus bill includes tax cuts, funding for transportation projects, school funding and other measures touted to boost the economy.

The AISD could receive nearly $5.3 million in federal funding for construction, nearly $4 million to help ensure students in districts with high numbers or percentages of poor children meet academic standards, and more than $4.5 million to educate children with disabilities, according to CRS estimates.

In the AISD's 2007-08 budget, federal money accounted for about $1.2 million of the district's total $114 million general fund revenues. The rest of the funds came from state and local taxes.

Big Country superintendents couldn't be reached Tuesday because most districts canceled class because of icy roads.

The dollars might be a worthy means to fund education, but lawmakers haven't had the opportunity to debate whether school funding would stimulate the economy, officials with Neugebauer's office said.

For another Big Country lawmaker the answer was clear: The school funding will not stimulate the economy.

"It will not create permanent jobs," said U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Midland, of the 11th Congressional District. "It will not create permanent wealth, and it comes at a cost that our great-grandchildren will still be paying the interest on that debt when they're adults."

He said he trusts residents in his district to provide their children with a good education, along with state funds.

U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry said he is not swayed by federal education grants that could come to his 13th Congressional District.

If a person is focused solely on what he'll get out of the bill, the school funding sounds great, Thornberry, R-Clarendon, said. But it doesn't sound so good when a lawmaker takes the bigger picture into consideration.

The bill is a "grab bag" of 150 federal programs, and many clearly won't create jobs at all, he said.

"I think the approach of the stimulus bill is to spread an enormous amount of money in as many places as possible," Thornberry said.

The Big Country delegation isn't wary only of school funding but the entire package.

But they were appreciative that Obama took the trouble to spend about an hour making his case for the stimulus package before House Republicans on Tuesday at the Capitol.

He also listened to their point of view.

"I'm not sure that many minds were changed, but I think it's important to be able to talk to one another," Thornberry said.

Obama told them he thinks the economy is in serious shape, and that justifies shortcuts to get the stimulus package through quickly.

"But a number of people talked about the cost and about the fact that this is not money the government has lying around," Thornberry said. "It's got to be taxed or borrowed out of one part of the economy for government to spend it in another part of the economy."

Neugebauer said he favors tax cuts and other methods of stimulating investment and job creation in the economy -- not government spending. He's also unhappy about the $1.2 trillion deficit the country is on track for this year.

"That number could easily go higher and probably will go higher with a stimulus package," Neugebauer said.

What's more, the price tag of the stimulus package is more than $1 trillion when the cost of paying it back is counted, Neugebauer said.

Conaway said Obama was "charming and self-deprecating but unpersuasive in his appeal."

Conaway plans to oppose the bill, saying that if the country is in a temporary recession, whether it lasts multiple years or not, then why borrow money that will never be repaid to address a short-term problem?

"And that's what we're asking Congress to do and the American people to swallow in a giant way," Conaway said.

For better or worse, John Updike produced a nearly endless stream of work

For David Foster Wallace, he was one of "the Great Male Narcissists." Martin Amis declared that the last section of his 1989 memoir "Self-Consciousness" was "to my knowledge the best thing yet written on what it is like to get older: age, and the only end of age." Nicholson Baker celebrated his "assured touch, [his] adjectival resourcefulness."

But for me, the lasting image of John Updike, who died Tuesday of lung cancer at age 76, is as a self-described "freelancer," who produced a nearly endless stream of book reviews, novels, stories, poems and occasional pieces -- more than 60 volumes' worth in all -- because he felt he'd be forgotten if he didn't keep his name in print.

I met Updike in November, when I did a public interview with him at UCLA Live. He had been sick, he said, with pneumonia. He looked thin, but he was hearty, dressed in a suit and a pink tie. Before the event, we sat in the green room at Royce Hall and talked baseball, going back and forth about the Yankees (my team) and the Red Sox (his), as well as the Philadelphia Phillies, who had won the World Series a few weeks before.

It's easy to forget, amid all his writing, that one of Updike's early masterpieces was a 1960 essay for the New Yorker called "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu," in which he describes Ted Williams' final game, a spectacle he almost effortlessly elevated to the level of art. "The affair between Boston and Ted Williams," Updike wrote, "has been no mere summer romance; it has been a marriage, composed of spats, mutual disappointments, and, toward the end, a mellowing hoard of shared memories. It falls into three stages, which may be termed Youth, Maturity, and Age; or Thesis, Antithesis, and Synthesis; or Jason, Achilles, and Nestor."

This was Updike's gift: the felicitous phrase, the attention to detail, the ability to make the mundane profound. And yet, this was also his greatest limitation, for in his lesser efforts, he never quite penetrated the surface of his language, leaving us to skitter along the exterior without breaking through to the emotions underneath.

To my surprise, Updike was very open about this; he brought it up, once we were onstage. Did he write too much? he asked rhetorically. Probably. But he had made a promise to himself early on that he would publish a book a year, and a novel every other year, and he saw no reason to rethink it now.

Had he written some books that hadn't worked? Certainly. What writer of his longevity hadn't, on occasion, missed the mark? But better that, he suggested, than to hole up, a la Saul Bellow, and only deliver a piece of writing every five years. Think of the anxiety to deliver, the pressure to produce a masterwork. It was far more useful, he had decided, to be front and center in the culture, to be a working writer, to do the best he could and then move on.

Updike is commonly regarded as the poet laureate of the suburbs, but that's not really accurate. Yes, he evoked a certain middle-class domestic culture at the precise moment (the 1960s and 1970s) that it was exploding; without him, there'd be no Rick Moody, no Ethan Canin -- to name just two.

But more than suburban life, Updike was really an explorer of consciousness, of the mental drama; this is why Wallace derided him as a solipsist. Even his most celebrated works, the Rabbit novels, are less about domestic life than they are sagas of one man -- confused, guilt-ridden, tormented by his own not-fully-thought-out choices -- struggling to make sense of himself. For Updike, it didn't happen unless he'd thought it through, reflected on it. If that, at times, could keep us at a distance, it was the clearest expression of who he was.

This is why, of all his contemporaries, Updike was the most effective critic; for more than 40 years, he reviewed books and art for the New Yorker and the New York Review of Books with acuity and grace. He described it as a way to keep his hand in, but in fact, criticism became a parallel spoke of his career, a balance to his fiction, a way to think about, as well as to produce, literature.

Clearly, the two pursuits spoke to each other within him; "Rabbit, Run" -- published in 1960, when he was just 28 -- was written in reaction to another iconic novel of its moment, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road." What Updike wanted, he explained on that night at UCLA, was to write a book in which going on the road had consequences, to explore what might have happened had Kerouac's Sal Paradise left a wife and child behind.

Such a statement speaks to a certain rigid moral vision, which was again, perhaps, both a weakness and a strength. Updike was not a revolutionary writer, and he may have suffered from having lived -- and written -- through revolutionary times. His least compelling books, such as 2006's "Terrorist," are attempts to remain relevant; he was at his finest when he described the world he saw.

Real Housewives... in Kane County

There's a good chance that Elfstrom Stadium and the Kane County Cougars will be included in this evening's episode of a popular reality television show on the Bravo network.

Last season, the son of one of the featured women of "The Real Housewives of Orange County", Jeana Keough was Cougars outfielder Shane Keough. Shane, who is occasionally included on the television series, played the entire '08 season at Kane County as an outfielder in the Oakland A's farm system.

During a game last August, Jeana and the Housewives crew visited Geneva and attended a Cougars game at Elfstrom Stadium.

The closing footage from last week's episode hinted strongly towards the possibility of tonight's new episode including footage taken from the Housewives' visit last summer.

The show airs tonight at 9 p.m. CDT on the Bravo network and is typically re-aired at various times throughout the week. Interested fans can visit www.bravotv.com for complete program listings or also visit www.kccougars.com.

American Idol Delivers Vintage Randy Jackson Journey Video

American idol certainly seems as if it is off to a very slow start. But on Tuesday night the audience was treated to a bit of vintage video featuring a plump and dated Randy Jackson when he appeared with the rock band Journey. While the band was very popular in the late seventies and early eighties and Randy always seems to mention his stint, exactly when was he in the band?

Wiki rescues with this, "After the widely successful Frontiers stadium tour, Journey decided to take some time off. Lead singer Steve Perry and guitarist Neal Schon both pursued solo projects between 1982 and 1985. In 1985 the band released two songs previously intended for Frontiers--Only the Young, on the soundtrack to the movie Vision Quest; and Ask the Lonely, on the soundtrack to the movie Two of a Kind."

***

"Only the Young" managed to nick the top ten, reaching #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. When Journey finally returned to record their 1986 album Raised on Radio, bass player Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were fired from the band for musical and professional differences."

Enter Jackson. "Studio musicians handled the two vacant slots, including future American Idol judge Randy Jackson and established session player Larrie Londin. The album went multiplatinum selling over two million copies...the tour was videotaped by MTV and made into a documentary, which included interviews with the current band members and concert footage of the Mountain Aire Festival show in Angels Camp, California. Steve Perry left Journey in 1987.

Live Cricket Score - India Sri Lanka Cricket Series 2009

Toss India chose to field v Sri Lanka
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details

MS Dhoni put Sri Lanka in on a pitch that traditionally helps seamers early on. Void of grass, the moisture on the track promised assistance for the faster men early on.

India went into the match without the injured Virender Sehwag, who was replaced by Rohit Sharma. Sehwag's absence also resulted in an interesting opening combination for India: Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir, who was rested in the last ODI against England.

To cash in on the conditions, India went in with three fast bowlers - Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel - and the lone spinner in Pragyan Ojha.

India looked to have a go at what has been the weaker aspect of the Sri Lankan game of late, the batting. Apart from Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made a transition from middle order to opening, not many of their batsmen have been in good form, which explains the scratchy wins in Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. However, the hosts opted for the same XI that thrashed Pakistan by 234 runs in Lahore to win the series 2-1.

India 1 Sachin Tendulkar, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt./wk), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Munaf Patel.

Sri Lanka 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt.), 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Thilan Thushara, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha Mendis

Djokovic succumbs to heat, Roddick

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Defending champion Novak Djokovic struggled in the heat Tuesday before retiring from his Australian Open quarterfinal against American Andy Roddick.

Roddick advanced 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2, 2-1, maintaining a sequence of semifinal appearances at Melbourne Park every alternate year since 2003.

Third-seeded Djokovic had just had his service broken to go down 2-1 in the fourth set when he went to the side of the court and told umpire Carlos Ramos he could not continue.

He shook hands with Roddick and left Rod Laver Arena with the trainers.

The outside temperature with the roof open at Rod Laver Arena during the match was as high as 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit).

He'd had a medical timeout after recovering a service break to lead 2-1 in the third set and complained of heat-related problems.

Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, won the next five games to finish off the third set, winning the last 11 points.

Djokovic, who beat Roddick in the quarterfinals at last year's U.S. Open, finally held the opening game of the fourth set after nine minutes but was visibly slowing down and irritated.

Earlier in the day, Vera Zvonareva ran off 11 straight games in a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marion Bartoli at the Australian Open on Tuesday to reach the semifinals for the first time in 25 majors.

The 24-year-old Russian's best performance in six previous trips to Melbourne was the fourth round -- she'd gone out in the first round at the Australian Open three times, including last year. And she made the quarterfinals at the 2003 French Open.Read More ....

Album review: The Bird and the Bee's 'Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future'

The Bird and the Bee, the project of singer Inara George and Lily Allen’s producer Greg Kurstin, makes exquisite dinner party music. That’s not a slight — like any other subgenre, it has its good and its bad, its watered-down faux bubbly and its liquid gold. And the Bird and the Bee’s second album, “Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future,” is on the liquid gold side — let’s say Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, because Françoise Hardy probably drinks it.

Building crisp pop imbibements that can stand up to several listens is no easy task, but the Bird and the Bee has found the trick: Complex melodies constructed of several simple, shiny parts, all revolving around George’s breathy voice, the calling card of a nocturnal party sprite who might be cooing her songs at a flirty soiree.

But she’s also not afraid to command the center: “Polite Dance Song” is a showcase for Kurstin and George’s sly wit. Over an arched eyebrow of a beat, George demands, with extra sugar, for you to dance. She’s also adorably kooky: In “Diamond Dave,” a perfumed mash note for David Lee Roth, she pledges her undying love for the king of the unitard.

There are moments when the party cools, when George retreats to an introspective center, but that’s what you play when everyone’s gone and you still have all those dishes to do and only a drop of Veuve left.

General Motors says its hybrids aren’t just for America when Opel, GM’s German subsidiary, debuts the Opel Ampera at the Geneva Auto Show.

The five-door, four-seat Ampera will use the same Voltec “extended range electric” technology that will power the Chevrolet Volt. For of no more than 60 km (36 miles, an approximation of the 40 miles pure electric mode of the Volt), the Ampera will run only on lithium-ion battery power charged via the European standard 230v outlet. A small on-board internal combustion engine runs a generator recharging the batteries while the Ampere continues to be powered by the electric motor.

“With the Ampera, Opel will be the first European automobile manufacturer to provide customers several hundred kilometers of non-stop electric driving,” said Alain Visser, GM Europe Chief Marketing Officer.

Eighty percent of Germans drive no more than 50 kilometers every day. The Opel Ampera would allow these drivers to operate in pure electric mode for virtually all their driving while delivering them from the dreaded range anxiety.

More information—as well as more than just a sneak-peek of the car’s exterior—will be available after the Opel Ampera’s introduction on March 3.

Grant Haas & Ted Haggard: Haas & Haggard relationship

KRDO-TV, in Colorado Springs, reported that Grant Haas talked about his relationship with Ted Haggard while Haggard was the evangelical pastor of New Life Church. Grant Haas said Ted Haggard did a sex act in his presence while they were inside a hotel room in 2006. Grant Haas claimed Ted Haggard sent him sexually explicit text messages.

Grant Haas said his relationship with Haggard caused him to isolate himself, struggle with a drinking addiction and a drug addiction. Haas claimed he attempted suicide.

Grant Haas alleged he was 22 when he met Haggard in 2005. Haas is now 25. The New Life Church had agreed to settle with Haas by paying for his medical and college education. In return, Haas was supposed to keep mum about his relationship with haggard. However, Haas said the Church failed to maintain its promise.

Alexandra Pelosi was the director of the HBO documentary. (Source)

The Georgia Guide stones

As They Stand They Point Everywhere; Encompassing the Cardinal Directions in Orientation to the Heavens: Their Message is for Everyone.

The four large upright blocks pointing outward are oriented to the limits of the migration of the moon during the course of the year.

An eye-level, oblique hole is drilled from the South to the North side of the center, Gnomen stone, so that the North Star is always visible, symbolizing constancy and orientation with the heavens.the forces of nature.

A slot is cut in the middle of the Gnomen stone to form a window which aligns with the positions of the rising sun at the Summer and Winter Solstices and at the Equinox, so that the noon sun shines to indicate noon on a curved line.

The cap stone includes a calendar of sorts, where sunlight beams through a 7/8 inch hole at noon, and shines on the South face of the center stone. As the sun makes its travel cycle, the spot beamed through the hole can tell the day of the year at noon each day. Allowances are made because of variations between standard time and sun time to set the beam of sunlight at an equation of time.

The site was chosen because it commands a view to the East and to the West and is within the range of the Summer and Winter sunrises and sunsets. The stones are oriented in those directions.

The Guides Explained

A massive granite monument espousing the conservation of mankind and future generations. Sources for the sizable financing of the project choose to remain anonymous. The wording of the message proclaimed on the monument is in 12 languages, including the archaic languages of Sanskrit, Babylonian Cuneiform, Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Classical Greek, as well as English, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Spanish, and Swahili.

The message of the Georgia Guide stones

1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature. Means the entire human race at its climax level for permanent balance with nature.

2. Guide reproduction wisely - improving fitness and diversity. Without going into details as yet undiscovered, this means humanity should apply reason and knowledge to guiding its own reproduction. "Fitness" could be translated as "health." "Diversity" could be translated as "variety".

3. Unite humanity with a living new language. A "living" language grows and changes with advancing knowledge. A "new" language will be developed "de novo" - and need not necessarily be adopted from any languages now in existence.

4. Rule passion - faith - tradition - and all things with tempered reason. "Faith" here may be used in a religious sense. Too often people are ruled by blind faith even when it may be contrary to reason. Reason must be tempered with compassion here - but must prevail.

5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
Courts must consider justice as well as law.

6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court. Individual nations must be free to develop their own destinies at home as their own people wish - but cannot abuse their neighbors.

7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials. Self explanatory.

8. Balance personal rights with social duties. Individuals have a natural concern for their personal welfare, but man is a social animal and must also be concerned for the group. Failure of society means failure for its individual citizens.

9. Prize truth - beauty - love - seeking harmony with the infinite. The infinite here means the supreme being - whose will is manifest in the working of the cosmos - if we will seek for it.

10. Be not a cancer on the earth - Leave room for nature - Leave room for nature. In our time, the growth of humanity is destroying the natural conditions of the earth which have fostered all existing life. We must restore reasoned balance.

Embattled coach Gottfried resigns

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Mark Gottfried resigned as Alabama's basketball coach Monday, leaving in the middle of his 11th season amid criticism of both the team's play and the departure of a star player.

The school said Gottfried will immediately be replaced by assistant coach Philip Pearson. Alabama's next game is Thursday at Arkansas.

Gottfried, who played at Alabama, said he quit during a meeting with athletic director Mal Moore.

"It has been a wonderful decade for me and my family, and I love the University of Alabama, but I feel that it is in the best interests of everyone involved," Gottfried said in a statement released by the university.

The Crimson Tide's record this season is 12-7, 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference.

Gottfried's teams have missed the NCAA tournament the last two years, and he was criticized over the recent departure of point guard Ronald Steele, a preseason first-team AP All-America two years ago who was later hit by injuries. The school blamed Steele's departure on a recent injury, but Steele said there was more to his decision than that.

Gottfried signed a six-year contract with Alabama in 2005 that made him the school's first $1 million basketball coach and gave him a larger salary than that of football coach Mike Shula. The contract ran through 2011 and included a buyout if he were fired, but any financial terms tied to his resignation were not released.

Moore said the school would begin trying to find a new coach immediately.

"Out of respect for our players and coaches, I will not comment on the progress of our search until it has concluded," Moore said in a statement.

The 45-year-old Gottfried took over at Alabama in 1998, replacing David Hobbs. He began a streak of five straight appearances in the NCAA tournament in 2002, reaching the round of eight in 2004 in the program's deepest tournament run, including a victory over top-ranked Stanford.

The players got the news when they arrived for practice Monday afternoon. Gottfried spoke to the team.

Rainbow Vacuum

The Rainbow Vacuum is like a top of the line expensive vacuum cleaner. They are actually quite a good vacuum. My brother was a vacuum cleaner saleman (he really was!) and he sold two types of vacuums one of them being the Rainbow Vacuum cleaner and the other was called ‘the pig’ but I forget the real name of it. These vacuums are really good vacuums as they suck up more dirt than other vacuums. It’s just that simple. My brother had this sales demonstration where he would have you vacuum a section of rug with your own vacuum until you thought it was clean and dandy. Then he would take the Rainbow Vacuum and clean the same spot, open up the vacuum and show the people how much dirt it picked up even AFTER you already vacuumed it. They are expensive but they are worth it if being clean is important to you. The Rainbow Vacuum rocks.

'Crime Scene' star Gerald McCullouch lands in real one

Gerald McCullouch has played crime scene investigator Bobby Dawson for nine seasons on “CSI.” But it was his knowledge of boxing, not ballistics, that saved him when a mugger allegedly attacked him with a knife on the subway recently.

The actor was riding the A train from Kennedy Airport, having just gotten off a plane from L.A.

“It was about 2 a.m.,” McCullouch tells us. “I have a place here now, so I take that train at least once a month. I was trying to reach my buddy, Keith Collins, who was having a party at Antik. But my iPhone died, so I took out my laptop to recharge it. I started working on a YouTube video I’d been editing on the plane.

“The train was pulling into the Utica Blvd. station when I noticed someone cross in front of me. Just as the doors opened, he reached for the laptop. I guess he thought he’d grab it and dash out the door, but I gave him a body shot to the chest.

“I don’t know why I did that except that I box three or four days a week and had just been in the ring about eight hours before. Also, I didn’t want to give up my computer after working on my video all that time.
“Well, that’s when he pulled a kitchen knife out of a black plastic bag. This thing must have had a blade 10 inches long. The other passengers started running out the door and into the next car.

“I still had my headphones on with music blaring. I yelled at the top of my lungs, ‘Get the [bleep] away from me!’ That’s when the knife came down into my back. I don’t know whether he lost his grip or what, but the blade didn’t penetrate my leather jacket.

“We were in each other’s face. I think I punched him again as the doors closed and the train started leaving the station. I’m watching MTA workers on the platform looking in. I thought, ‘Great, now I’m alone in this car with him.’

“The train was halfway out of the station when it stopped. I was saying stupid, cocky stuff, like ‘You are [bleeped] buddy!’ He came at me again with the knife. But the other passengers had told a conductor, ‘A guy’s getting stabbed in there,’ so the conductor came in and got me into the next car.

“Then about 10 cops jumped on the train and got the guy handcuffed on the floor. I told them the guy had a knife. They found it hidden under a seat or something.”

Police arrested James Torres, 39, 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, and charged him with robbery, assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.

“We headed over to the 33rd Precinct. When I got there somebody said they thought this might be the same guy who stabbed two cops.

“All I know is that the police couldn’t have been greater. I signed a lot of autographs. I don’t know whether it was because of ‘CSI,’ but they gave me a lift to my place in Manhattan.’”

Torres, now in Rikers, is due in court March 23.

McCullouch survived another mugging back in 2001, when he and a boyfriend were robbed at gunpoint in Atlanta.

“The cops never found that guy,” says McCullouch, who plays the Gotham Comedy Club on Feb. 16. Maybe he’ll find a few jokes on the night that Bobby Dawson went ballistic.

Rockefeller Center ( a city with in a city ) 30 Rockefeller Plaza

Rockefeller Center ( a city with in a city )

Rockefeller Center is an art deco marvel consisting of 19 commercial buildings covering 11 acres in midtown Manhattan from 49th to 52nd Streets, Fifth to Seventh Avenues.

Named after the multi-millionaire, John D. Rockefeller, who leased the space from Columbia University in 1928.

Originally occupied by tenements and theaters, Rockefeller planned to revitalize the area with 3 huge office buildings and a new Metropolitan Opera House.

The stock market crash of 1929 helped scrap the original plans but Rockefeller still wanted a commercial district.

Hiring 3 architecture firms and a consulting firm, ground was broken on the Rockefeller Center we see today in late 1929.

30 Rockefeller Plaza (above) was the largest and first built. It is the centerpiece and probably best known building.

As you can see from this view from the Empire State Building, the 70-story building still towers over its modern competitors.

Completed in 1934, 30 Rockefeller Plaza became the RCA headquarters. General Electric's initials now brighten the rooftop of the home of NBC.

30 Rockefeller Plaza is the most public of the buildings and two of the most popular tourist attractions reside here.

The NBC Studio Tour, lets you see where popular shows like Saturday Night Live, Late Night With Conan O'Brien and NBC News are taped.

Art in the Rockefeller Center

The arcade of Rockefeller Center is the most popular route of tourists. Entering on Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, the center gardens make way to the sub-ground restaurant area which, as most are familiar with, becomes an ice skating rink in wintertime.

All of this is watched upon by Paul Manship's 1934 statue, Prometheus.

Surrounding the sub-ground area are the flags of all nations. Can you find your home flag here?

There were restaurants in the sub-ground area. Hopefully, new eateries will be back in time to enjoy outdoor dining in summer and exquisite views of ice skaters in winter.

Rockefeller Center also boasts
some terrific art!

When you walk around here, look everywhere. You'll find some of the most interesting art works gracing these outdoor edifices.

The art deco and art nouveau murals and mosaics have been wonderfully preserved and add a museum-like atmosphere to your visit.

The statue of Atlas by Lee Lowrie & Rene Chambellan (1937) holds an interesting story.

It seems Atlas resembled Mussolini, Italy's fascist dictator, and the statue was picketed upon its unveiling. Can you see the likeness?

Today Show/ Rockefeller Center Shopping

NBC installed a storefront studio on 49th Street and Rockefeller Plaza where each weekday morning, Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira host the Today show. Many visitors come down and can watch and maybe become a part of the program!

Of course, Rockefeller Center would be nothing without its wonderful shops and restaurants gracefully lining its buildings! From the H&M to Morell's Wine Bar, you'll find nearly everything here.

Atop the 65th floor, the Rainbow Room is a glamorous spot for dinner, drinks and dancing. It is only open on select days so you must call ahead to make reservations. The next door Rainbow Grill allows you a chance to see the great views at all times.

The majority of buildings in Rockefeller Center house some of the world's major companies, like Time Warner. This building, home to the Associated Press, definitely make walking into work more pleasant!

On a trivial note, there are 488 elevators in Rockefeller Center. A broken elevator should not be an excuse for being late for work!

The tall monoliths along Sixth Avenue were erected in the style of Rockefeller Center but only after 1960. They really look amazing in the late evening sky.The mammoth New York Hilton, with over 2,000 rooms is just up the block on 53rd Street.

Radio City Music Hall

When it opened as a movie palace in 1932, Radio City Music Hall was graced by such stars as Clark Gable and Charlie Chaplin.

Today, this 6,000 seat theater showcases premier concerts by the top musicians as well as the Christmas Spectacular featuring the famous Rockettes.

If you would like to get behind the scenes of over 60 years of New York City history, Radio City Music Hall offers guided tours 7 days a week.

See the great stage, the art deco interiors, the legendary Wurlitzer organ and even the Rockettes themselves! Call (212) 632-4041.

What's Christmas without Rockefeller Center? The most popular December destination features one gigantic tree and more than enough tradition and memories to fill your suitcase.

NYCtourist.com features a special Christmastime at Rockefeller Center section during the holiday season.
