Seven residents of Marlboro have submitted their names and are seeking to be appointed to an open seat on the Freehold Regional High School District Board of Education.
The seat for a Marlboro representative became open earlier this month when Katie Goon resigned from the board. Goon was elected to the seat in April 2008 but served less than one year of a three-year term.
Goon defeated the incumbent Marlboro representative, BonnieSue Rosenwald, to win the seat on the FRHSD board in the April 2008 school election.
Rosenwald is one of seven people who are now seeking to be appointed to the board. The other Marlboro residents seeking appointment are Barry Hochberg, Stacey Kleinstein, Gordon Loeb, Robert Nivison, James Sage and David Wolff.
Nivison is the retired transportation coordinator of the FRHSD.
Sage is the individual who last summer revealed a situation involving questionable advanced degrees that were obtained by FRHSD administrators.
Loeb is one of the advisers to Marlboro's Teen Advisory Committee.
Hochberg is a frequent attendee at FRHSD board meetings and has commented publicly on a variety of topics involving the district.
The deadline for residents to apply for the appointment was 4 p.m. Jan. 26. It was not immediately known how the board members will choose a replacement for Goon.
The person who is appointed to the board will serve until late April or early May.
On April 21, the final two years of the term Goon won in 2008 will be on the school election ballot. Marlboro residents have until March 2 to file a nominating petition stating their intention to run for the unexpired term.
Under the board's voting rules, residents of Marlboro and Colts Neck will vote for the person they want as the Marlboro representative.
According to the New Jersey School Boards Association, there are several requirements that must be met in order for an individual to run for election to a school board in the Garden State.
Those requirements include being able to read and write; holding U.S. citizenship and at least one year's residency in the school district; having no interest in any contract with, or claim against, the board; not holding office as the mayor or a member of the municipal governing body or, in the case of county school districts, the county governing body; and being registered to vote in the school district.
The FRHSD Board of Education oversees the operation of the district, which enrolls almost 12,000 students and has six high schools that serve residents of eight sending municipalities.
